Folk Heroes:

A conversation between Cheryl Foggo & Ashli St. Armant

Date: Thursday, Feb 27, 2025

Time: 5pm-6:30pm PST

Artists are often advised to “show, don’t tell,” but what does this mean for people who have been prevented from telling their stories, or who have had their stories erased?

This Black History Month, Affirming Connections will host a conversation between Cheryl Foggo and Ashli St. Armant, both accomplished artists who use the oral traditions of storytelling and folk music to reclaim, reframe and unearth the complex and varied histories of people of African descent in North America.

Join us for a rich discussion of the complexities of making present-day art with one foot in the past, and what oral traditions can tell us about the lives of people who were prevented from writing their own chapters in the history books.
