Ironically I find pictures of an angry Jesus quite comforting. Yes, they can be unsettling, disrupting our understanding of Jesus as a bottomless source of grace and love. But we forget that he was also human; subject to exhaustion, frustration, even feelings of despair and abandonment. On the days, weeks, COVID year, of cycling through those same feelings I find it ever so hopeful to know that Jesus is with me in those moments too, and not just the moments when I’m at my best. This Sunday we’ll consider what drove Jesus to this fit of rage. And maybe this week we can think about what gets our righteous anger going, and what we do about it - given that swinging around a braided whip is out of the question.
